The city of Lafayette has acknowledge the local effects of climate change and has been a leader in sustainability among Colorado communities.

In October 2017, the Lafayette City Council passed a resolution establishing community-wide goals to achieve 80% reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and 100% renewable energy for electricity by 2030.

Lafayette is targeting three main sectors to reduce their carbon footprint: stationary energy, transportation and waste. In 2015, residential energy was the cause of 32% of Lafayette’s total carbon footprint.
